Marymass – an annual link with Irvine traditions

	Every third year, a St Michael’s pupil has had the honour of representing the youth of Irvine as Marymass Queen. Shown here are (left to right) Eileen Martin (1970, whom we remember with sadness as she died during her year), Alicia Laughland (1973), Alana Guidi (1995), Jennifer Egan (2001), and Siobhan King (2004). Below is an extra photo, from after publication of the book - the last ever St Michael's Marymass Queen, Courtney Finnegan in 2007.

Marymass is a centuries-old tradition, maintained by the Carters’ Society, and supported by North Ayrshire Council, but the Queen and Marys were introduced only in 1928.
and in the other years the Marymass Marys, her ladies-in-waiting, include one or two of St Michael's pupils resident in the KA12 postal code, the area of the former Royal Burgh of Irvine.
This tradition will continue in the life of St Matthew's Academy.
